From Science Teacher to Volunteer Driver: Chris Brunner’s Story
After a fulfilling career as a science teacher, I’ve spent my life immersed in learning and discovery, teaching grades 1-12 across British Columbia and beyond. Since retiring in 2020, I’ve called Kitsilano home, enjoying a quieter pace of life. But in May 2023, a new chapter began when I joined the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society (VCDS)—a journey that has been both rewarding and transformative.
It all started with a simple moment. I was listening to CKNW when I heard about VCDS’s “100 drivers in 100 days” campaign. At that moment, everything aligned: I had the time, a passion for driving, and a deeply personal connection to the cause—two people close to me lost their lives to cancer. Inspired by the call to action, I thought, “I could do that.” I applied, and the rest is history. Now, each drive is more than just a trip—it’s an opportunity to give back in a way that truly matters.
One thing I’ve found remarkable is the resilience and optimism of the patients I meet. Even those facing stage 4 cancer often greet life with laughter and an unwavering positive outlook. Their strength leaves an impression on me every time, reminding me of the extraordinary power of hope.
Joining VCDS has given me a profound sense of purpose in retirement. Here’s to more drives, more inspiring stories, and continuing to make a difference—one mile at a time.
