Beverly Schultz – Helping Others
When Beverly’s best friend Liz was diagnosed with lung and brain cancer in 2015, she drove her to every appointment — radiation, chemo, and countless doctor visits.
Liz passed away in 2016, but Beverly carried a promise in her heart: one day, she would volunteer to help others facing the same difficult journey.
In 2023, she saw our call for “100 drivers in 100 days” and, without hesitation, signed up to become a Volunteer Cancer Driver.
“I’ve met the nicest, most grateful, resilient, and positive people,” Beverly says. “We’ve laughed, shared stories, and had the best conversations. It’s so rewarding to hear someone say, ‘You made my day.’”
For Beverly, every ride is more than a drive — it’s a chance to bring comfort, ease stress, and connect with people during one of the hardest times in their lives.
And through it all, she carries Liz with her. At home, she’s reminded of their friendship every day by Macy Gray, the cat she adopted when Liz passed away.
Beverly describes volunteering with VCDS in three words: Gratifying. Inspirational. Humbling.
Thank you, Beverly, for your incredible compassion and dedication.
