Cliff Zenzen | Why I Drive
There’s something quietly powerful about people who show up consistently, compassionately, and without needing recognition. Cliff Zenzen is one of those people.
Born in Vancouver and raised in the Fraser Valley, Cliff has spent a lifetime rooted in community. From coaching adult and children’s baseball and being a member of Kinsmen and Kiwanis to raising two daughters, Tracey and Linda, with his wife Susan, giving back has always been part of who he is.
In May 2023, Cliff added another chapter to that story when he joined the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society after his daughter, a schoolteacher in Chilliwack, told him there was a need, especially for drivers willing to make the longer trips into Vancouver.
Cliff stepped in without hesitation.
Today, he serves as both a driver and an orientation driver, helping ensure that patients can get to the care they need. But for Cliff, it is never just about the drive. It is about easing a burden during one of the most difficult times in a person’s life.
“The gratification I get is helping people. People newly diagnosed are so stressed, and the last thing they need is worrying about how they’ll get to and from their appointments.”
One moment that stays with him is from early on, a patient named Maria. Even now, when she sees him around town, she comes up, gives him a hug, and thanks him repeatedly. It is a simple gesture, but it speaks volumes about the impact Cliff has made.
At home in Greendale, Cliff stays busy on the family’s five-acre property, often found on his tractor keeping things in shape. He is also still active part-time with his sales agency. But no matter how full life gets, he continues to make time to volunteer because, for him, it is stimulating, fulfilling, and rewarding.
Cliff’s message to others is simple: if you enjoy connecting with people and want to make a real difference, this is a meaningful way to do it.
Through every kilometre driven and every patient supported, Cliff reminds us what community care truly looks like.
Thank you, Cliff, for the compassion, reliability, and kindness you bring to every single drive. You are making a difference in ways that truly matter.
