April Lightbown – Why I Drive
Meet April, a resident of Maple Ridge and one of our newest Volunteer Cancer Drivers, already making a lasting impact in just a few short months.
After retiring in May 2024, April didn’t slow down—she stepped right into a new chapter of purpose. She completed her VCDS orientation in March 2025 and took her first ride in April.
“I was a bit worried I’d be bored,” she laughs. “So I started planning my volunteer journey months before I left my job.”
Her inspiration is simple but powerful:
“It’s my way of paying it forward. A ride can mean everything when someone’s going through a tough time. It’s not just about getting there, it’s about showing up.”
One of her most meaningful connections has been with Heather, a patient she drove to radiation appointments.
“We just clicked. She’s brave, funny, and inspiring. I’m honoured to be part of her journey, and now, her friend.”
A moment that truly stuck with her was when Heather’s sister joined a ride and called them “Cancer Driver Angels.”
“That moment really got me. It reminded me how meaningful this work is.”
Outside of VCDS, April is anything but idle. She volunteers with the Maple Ridge Hospice Society and Emergency Support Services, and serves on her condo’s Strata Council. She also cares for the trees and gardens on her three-acre property, alongside her loyal sidekick, Finn, a miniature long-haired dachshund.
“The gratitude from patients when they no longer have to worry about how they’ll get to treatment, it’s incredibly humbling.”
Her values run deep:
“My mom raised me to work hard and give back. I had no idea how deeply moving this experience would be.”
What has she gained?
“Patience. Grace. Resilience.”
Thank you, April, for showing us what it means to drive with heart.
