David Weir, resident of Pitt Meadows “Why I Drive”

Back in the fall of 2017, David Weir was looking for something meaningful to do with his extra time. After years of teaching in Coquitlam, he had shifted to part-time work and wanted a way to give back. A small article in the Tri-City News about the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society (VCDS) caught his eye, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Since then, David has become a steady and dedicated presence on our team. He began driving patients in Coquitlam, later moved to Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, and today serves the PoCo/Port Moody area. About two years ago, David took on an additional role: training new VCDS drivers, sharing his experience and passion with others who want to make a difference.

For David, volunteering is about more than just driving.

“Cancer patients need many trips to hospitals and appointments, and family and friends can’t always fill the need. I’m happy to provide some assistance, however that might present itself.”

Outside of VCDS, David has led an active and varied life, from coaching basketball and refereeing at a professional level to woodworking, gardening, cooking, and baking. But it’s his work with VCDS that he says has shifted his perspective most.

“Hearing patients’ stories really puts my own minor life concerns in perspective. I’ve become more patient, more accepting, and probably a better listener too.”

When asked what he’d say to anyone thinking about volunteering, David keeps it simple:

“If you have a car, some free time, and enjoy driving, take the opportunity to help those in need. The demand is unfortunately very high, and patients are so appreciative.”

David, thank you for your years of dedication, your kindness, and your willingness to show up for others. You remind us that even the smallest gestures, a ride, a conversation, a moment of listening, can change lives.
