Volunteer Spotlight: Anthony Dutton – Why I Drive
For Anthony, a resident of Vancouver, volunteering with the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society is personal. After losing his dad to cancer and watching him drive himself to appointments when he shouldn’t have, Anthony knew he wanted to help others facing similar challenges.
For the past three years, he’s been driving cancer patients across Vancouver, making sure they get to their treatments safely and stress-free. But for Anthony, it’s about more than just driving.
“The people inspire me. Their strength and positivity, even in the hardest moments, is humbling.”
One patient’s story that stays with him was a young woman navigating cancer while rebuilding her life after separation. Her resilience and gratitude left a lasting impact.
“We volunteer to help others, but along the way, we discover empathy, gratitude, and perspective.”
Anthony sums up his experience in three words: Fulfilling. Grateful. Humbling.
Anthony reminds us that giving back is a two-way street:
“Volunteering is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. One day, you may need someone to help you and this is a chance to be there for others now.”
Thinking about volunteering? Anthony’s advice:
“Just try it. You might find it changes you, too.”
Thank you, Anthony, for your generosity, compassion, and dedication to supporting cancer patients across Vancouver.
