Don Hiebert | Why I Drive

“Retirement isn’t slowing down, it’s finding purpose every day.”

For Don, that purpose comes from volunteering with the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society. Based in Abbotsford, he has been supporting patients for nearly three years, offering rides, conversation, and care when it matters most.

What Don loves most is listening.

“Patients share incredible life stories and journeys. It’s a privilege to hear them.”

One experience that stays with him is driving a patient multiple times a week from Mission to Vancouver for treatment. Over those rides, he saw firsthand how resilience and positivity can shine through life’s unexpected detours.

Outside of volunteering, Don keeps life full by travelling with his wife, woodworking, gardening, cycling, and even running. He recently completed a 10K in York, UK.

His advice to anyone considering volunteering is simple:

“Listen to your heart and respond.”

Three words that define his VCDS journey: fulfilling, inspiring, and encouraging.

Thank you, Don, for living retirement with purpose and making a difference in every patient’s day.
