Susan Fisher | Why I Volunteer
After 38 years as a nurse, most of them spent caring for children, Susan could have stepped fully into a quiet retirement.
Instead, she chose to keep showing up for people.
Three years ago, she joined the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society and began driving clients from White Rock and South Surrey to Surrey Memorial Hospital.
She calls it a privilege, because behind every appointment is a person navigating one of the hardest seasons of their life. Some drives are filled with stories about childhood memories, careers, grandchildren, and travel adventures. Other times, the car is quiet. Susan lets each client set the tone. What matters most is that they feel safe, respected, and cared for, and that they do not have to worry about traffic, parking, or how they will get there.
“Each one brings a story and creates a memory so unique to them all.”
She says she is in awe of their resilience and positivity.
When asked to describe her volunteer experience in three words, she did not hesitate:
Meaningful. Humbling. Human.
Susan, thank you for turning ordinary car rides into moments of dignity and connection. You are making difficult days a little lighter for so many in our community.
If this story moves you, consider sharing it or consider volunteering. It might just change you, too.
