Candy Haslam
Why I Volunteer as a Driver and  Dispatcher

Candy Haslam began volunteering with the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society after watching friends and family navigate cancer and seeing just how exhausting it can be to depend on others for rides to countless appointments. When she heard a radio call for volunteer drivers, something clicked. She knew this was a way she could truly help.

Since June 2023, Candy has been supporting patients in Port Moody and Port Coquitlam as a volunteer driver. In 2024, she also stepped into a relief dispatcher role, helping coordinate rides and support fellow volunteers behind the scenes. She now sees the impact of this work from both perspectives and holds deep respect for the care and dedication of the VCDS community.

Candy often speaks about the quiet strength of the patients she meets. Despite everything they are facing, many remain warm, hopeful, and grateful for connection.

“One patient she drives regularly shared that her family feels comforted knowing Candy will be there, because her calm presence and conversation help ease anxiety before treatment.”

Outside of volunteering, Candy pours her generosity into birdwatching, swimming, and knitting for charitable causes. From Knitted Knockers for breast cancer patients to mittens for kindergarten students, her compassion extends far beyond the driver’s seat.

Candy describes her volunteer experience in three words: grateful, humbled, and fulfilled.

Thank you to Candy and all VCDS volunteers who make it possible for cancer patients to get to treatment with care and compassion. If you are looking for a meaningful way to give back, consider joining our volunteer team. Your time can truly change someone’s day.
