Volunteer Spotlight: Heather Blower
If you ask Heather what has guided her life, the answer is simple: connection.
In January 2025, Heather, a resident of Maple Ridge, joined the team of volunteer drivers. Volunteering and giving back is something she has done for as long as she can remember. She began as a Candy Striper in hospitals and long-term care, volunteered with hospice and the United Way, and dedicated 35 years as a Registered Nurse.
But it was the loss of her brother to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at just 38 that deepened her commitment to supporting those facing cancer.
Today, she drives patients in Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and Mission, providing more than transportation. She offers security, reliability, comfort, and something just as important: presence.
“The moments I cherish most are when patients express gratitude for the small things, helping them in and out of the vehicle, taking the time to truly listen, or sharing a genuine conversation.”
Recently, a wife thanked her for the care she showed her husband during a ride. Another patient thanked her for being open to conversation despite a language barrier. Simple moments. Heartfelt impact.
Outside of volunteering, Heather cherishes time with her husband, five children, their partners, and her four-month-old granddaughter. Yoga, walking, swimming, and relaxing by the lake fill her cup.
Her words to anyone considering volunteering reflect the meaning she has found in the role:
“It’s meaningful, inclusive, and deeply rewarding. There is a real need, and the organization is professionally run by a fantastic team of volunteers.”
When asked to describe her experience, three words come to mind: connection, enriching, and grateful.
We are so thankful to have Heather as part of the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society.
