Volunteer Spotlight: Andrew Bostock – Why I Drive

For Andrew Bostock, a resident of Coquitlam, volunteering with the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society started with a simple question:

Every Friday, he’d ask his wife Jacki, who also happens to be a VCDS dispatcher, “How’s the puzzle going?” — a nod to the task of scheduling rides. One day, Jacki looked at him and said, “I NEED MORE DRIVERS.”

That was October 2019. Andrew applied the same day and hasn’t looked back.

Since then, Andrew has completed over 1,200 drives across the Tri-Cities and Coquitlam region, helping cancer patients get to their appointments safely and stress-free.

“So many patients have no one to help them, or worry about driving across bridges, finding parking, or going alone. Our service takes that weight off their shoulders.”

For Andrew, the rides aren’t just about transportation — they’re about connection.

“I really enjoy chatting with patients. Everyone has a story, and I’ve met so many incredible people.”

Outside of VCDS, Andrew and Jacki love travelling, exploring local trails with their two dogs, biking, playing soccer, and spending time with their 95-year-old family member who keeps them on their toes. Both Andrew and Jacki have lost family members to cancer, which makes this work especially meaningful.

When asked to sum up his experience with VCDS in three words, Andrew doesn’t hesitate: Helpful. Rewarding. Impactful.

Andrew, thank you for your dedication, your heart, and your 1,200+ rides of hope. You remind us what giving back truly looks like.
