Mike Britton – Chilliwack Resident

For Mike Britton, every drive begins the same way: checking Google Maps from home, reviewing road and highway conditions, and preparing for whatever the day may bring. Mike first became a volunteer driver after seeing an advertisement while looking for a meaningful way to give back.
“Volunteering is about doing something for someone else.”
Over the years, he has learned that no two rides are the same. Some patients want to chat. Others prefer silence. Some need distraction, while others simply need someone willing to listen.
“Many patients really need to talk, and just listening can be all they need.”
Driving patients to cancer treatments can also be emotionally difficult. There are stories of hardship, fears about procedures, and sometimes heartbreaking outcomes. Yet through it all, Mike continues to show up with compassion and realism.
“My motto is, ‘if you can give, give,’ and sometimes giving means giving in a way that may not be easy.”
Mike describes volunteering as being partly on the patient’s terms and meeting people where they are on that day. After many years of volunteering, Mike now takes fewer rides and occasional breaks, but he still continues helping whenever he can. His advice to new volunteers is simple:
“Try to be ready for all different types of drives.”
Mike, thank you for your honesty, compassion, and dedication to supporting patients through some of life’s hardest moments. Your kindness matters more than you know.
