Anne Lawlor – Why I Drive!
After retiring, Anne Lawlor wanted to give back in a meaningful way, and when a friend mentioned the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society (VCDS), she decided to get involved. Initially interested in learning more about the organization before joining the Board, Anne started as a volunteer driver in Fall 2022, and it quickly became so much more than she expected.
Anne serves patients on Vancouver’s West Side and often helps out on the East Side when she has extra availability. For her, the best part of volunteering is simple: the people.
“Meeting and talking with patients is incredible. Their positivity and strength while facing cancer is amazing, I’m constantly in awe.”
Anne has driven many patients, but one experience stands out. After driving the same patient to several appointments, she was there for the life-changing moment when the patient learned her treatments had worked — she was cancer-free.
“I had really connected with her over our many drives, so it was such wonderful news to be part of.”
Since retiring, Anne loves to travel, spend time with her family, and continue finding ways to give back to her community.
Anne describes her experience with VCDS in three words: Impactful. Rewarding. Enriching.
If you’ve ever thought about becoming a volunteer driver, Anne has this to say:
“It’s a truly rewarding experience and you can drive when it works best for your schedule.”
Thank you, Anne, for your time, compassion, and dedication to supporting cancer patients.
