Bruce Fatkin – Why I Drive!

Nine months ago, Bruce, resident of Abbotsford took the driver’s seat with Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society—and hasn’t looked back since. After hearing first-hand from his younger brother, who relied on VCDS during cancer treatment, Bruce knew this was a meaningful way to give back to the community he’s called home for over 76 years.

“I was looking for a way to contribute locally,” Bruce says. “My brother spoke about how caring and giving the drivers were, and a friend who’d been driving for years helped me get started.”

Since completing his orientation last November, Bruce has been offering rides and heartfelt connection to cancer patients in Abbotsford. And what continues to surprise him?

“How positive and upbeat the patients are—despite everything they’re going through. It’s inspiring.”

Bruce has met many memorable individuals along the way. Each one leaves a mark. Patients often share their gratitude, touched that strangers would so freely give their time to support them through one of life’s toughest journeys.

When he’s not on the road with VCDS, Bruce keeps busy with grandpa duty, tending to his yard, helping the local paper, and catching up with friends and family over too many cups of Timmy’s coffee.

He says volunteering has shifted his perspective:
“This work reminds me not to get too hung up on the little things. The strength and grace people bring to their cancer battles is deeply humbling.”
Bruce sums up his experience with three powerful words: Inspiring. Rewarding. Interesting.

And we couldn’t agree more.
Thank you, Bruce, for being a steady and compassionate presence in the lives of so many.
