Rita MacDonald – Why I Drive

Meet Rita MacDonald, a resident of North Vancouver and one of our compassionate Volunteer Cancer Drivers. She joined the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society in February 2025.

After retiring from a rewarding nursing career seven years ago, Rita was looking for a meaningful and flexible way to give back. When she saw the need for volunteer drivers, she knew it was the right fit.

“I really missed the connection with patients. This felt like a natural way to continue helping people during a difficult time in their lives.”

Rita has already made a difference for many cancer patients — especially those who live out of town, don’t have a car, or lack family support. While no single ride stands out to her, she notes how consistently kind and grateful each patient is.

“It’s easy to help someone who doesn’t have the means or support to get to treatment. And it makes such a big difference in their lives.”

Outside of volunteering, Rita enjoys travelling, gardening, and spending time with her newly adopted grand-puppy. Her personal connection to this cause runs deep — many of her family and friends have been affected by cancer, and this is her way of giving back.

To anyone considering becoming a volunteer, Rita has simple advice:

“It’s absolutely worth it.”

Thank you, Rita, for helping us ensure that no cancer patient is left without a ride to treatment.
