Volunteer Spotlight: Alan Litke – Why I Drive!

Meet One of Our Incredible Drivers Alan resident of Burnaby – volunteer since November 2022.

Every once in a while, we meet a volunteer whose journey comes full circle—and today, we’re proud to spotlight one such individual.

After undergoing life-saving cancer treatment at BCCA Vancouver, this dedicated Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society (VCDS) driver felt a strong pull to give back. “My cancer treatment saved my life,” he shares. “Now I want to support others walking a similar path.”

Since November 2022, he’s been behind the wheel, offering more than just a ride—he’s offering comfort, connection, and compassion. One particularly touching memory stands out: an elderly couple waiting on their doorstep just to wave goodbye after a ride. “That moment stayed with me,” he says. “It was such a simple act, but so full of gratitude.”

His most satisfying drives, however, often start as difficult ones. Like the time he helped calm a patient struggling with frustration and sadness. By the time they reached the destination, the patient had calmed down and was ready for their appointment. “I just listened. Sometimes that’s all a patient needs.”

His passengers often tell him how thankful they are—not just for the service, but for the human kindness that comes with it. It’s a sentiment he understands deeply: “The cancer journey is a difficult one, and I hope I’m making a small contribution to ease it.”

Outside the driver’s seat, he enjoys walking the dog, playing golf, and a game of slowpitch. But it’s volunteering that continues to shape his outlook. “It reminds me how lucky I am. And it’s inspiring to witness the courage and resilience of so many others.”

When asked to describe his experience with VCDS in three words, he didn’t hesitate: “Friendly. Courteous. Dependable. We couldn’t agree more. Thank you for your heart, your time, and your commitment. You are truly making a difference.
