Volunteer Spotlight: Jim Kwan – Why I Drive
For Jim Kwan, a resident of Richmond, volunteering with the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society is deeply personal. Cancer has touched his life many times — his father, his mother, and most profoundly, his wife, who passed away from late-stage ovarian cancer at just 52.
Jim channelled his grief into action. He formed Team Ohana for the Ride to Conquer Cancer, raising over $160,000 for cancer research. (“Ohana” means family and as Jim says, “Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.”)
When the ride paused during COVID, Jim went from two wheels to four, bought an EV, and became a VCDS driver. For the past three+ years, he’s been helping cancer patients in Richmond and Vancouver get to their essential appointments and, on occasion, trains new volunteers.
“The people are terrific. They’re so grateful for our service, and despite what they’re going through, they often greet me with a smile, sometimes even homemade cookies on a rainy day.”
One patient’s story stays close to Jim’s heart: a man longing to visit his family overseas. His wish was simple — to never need Jim’s rides again. Jim’s last drive with him was dropping him off at the airport, sending him off with a “bon voyage.” They still meet for coffee, and the patient remains in remission.
Jim sums up volunteering in three words: Rewarding. Satisfying. Inspiring.
Outside of VCDS, Jim keeps active — golfing, cycling, kayaking, swimming, fishing, and even playing pickleball. He also volunteers as a driver for a rehabilitation centre.
Thank you, Jim, for your compassion, dedication, and the heart you bring to every drive. You truly embody the spirit of VCDS.
