Diane Akelaitis “Why I Drive”
For Diane Akelaitis, a resident of North Vancouver, volunteering with the Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society is personal. After her mom required radiation treatment at the VCC, Diane learned about VCDS and felt drawn to help others facing the same challenges. Having recently retired, she wanted to give her time where it mattered most.
Since joining in the fall of 2021, Diane has completed nearly four years of service, driving patients in the Vancouver East community.
“I’ve had the pleasure of driving such a wide array of individuals and hearing their stories. It’s especially rewarding when patients share they’ve reached the end of their treatment and are excited to return to the simple pleasures of life.”
One ride even led to a surprising connection — discovering she and a patient had worked at the same company back in the 1980s.
For Diane, volunteering is about flexibility, compassion, and impact.
“It’s a highly rewarding experience. If you’re patient, empathetic, and want to make a difference, VCDS is a wonderful way to give back.”
Outside of volunteering, Diane loves travelling, outdoor sports, and spending time with her adult children, extended family, and aging parent.
Diane, thank you for touching so many lives with your time, kindness, and care.
